US Postal Service dumps .gov domain

Posted by: Robert  :  Category: News

For a while now the usps.gov site has been re-directing to usps.com… which technically is shouldn’t as it IS a government website. Sure they sell things, but it’s not COMmercial. Now the USPS has gone to the point of removing the USPS.GOV dns zone altogether. That’s not right!

Brute Force Attacks on the rise?

Posted by: Robert  :  Category: News, Quick Tips

We see on average 4 or 5 brute force attacks a day… Pretty standard stuff. Once it’s seen by the detection software, we confirm it, and blacklist the IP across all server as once they hit one, they tend to go after others. But for the past 24 hours, it seems like there’s been a drastic rise in the number of attempts. Think I’ve personally handled a couple dozen different originating IPs today. They come from all over but a lot have been in the US, which is a reversal of the trend we’ve seen in the past. Most came out of Europe or Asia previously. Was wondering if others are seeing the same thing. Let me know…

Facebook to release specs of it’s new datacenter

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Facebook will be releasing the technical specs of it’s new data center in Prineville, Oregon. This is a pretty unusual move. This information is generally considered proprietary and treated as confidential.

WD RE3 1TB drives for $59!

WD RE3 1TB
I don’t post that often about deals, but this one is worthy of an exception.

You are using RAID for your storage right?  You should be… but you know how expensive RAID type drives can be. And please don’t say you’re using consumer desktop drives!

Geeks.com is having a sale on Western Digital RE3 (RAID Edition 3) drives. These drives are different from the consumer models in that the firmware on the drives has been redone for being included in a RAID system. Regular WD drives are known for having issues when placed in RAID setups – they have an error and get dropped out of the array.  WD’s stance is simply those drives are not intended for RAID, and it’s the consumer’s problem not theirs. These drives however ARE configured and warranted for RAID use.

At this price I really expected to see refurbished drives listed on the site. These are new though but only carry a 180 day warranty. Considering most places want 3 to 4 times as much for the same drive, just buy an extra or 2…

Cloud Standards?

Posted by: Robert  :  Category: News

Everyone agrees that “the cloud” is a game changer for hosting… but far fewer can explain what “the cloud” is… Ask Microsoft and it’s something to watch your movies from your house while stuck at the airport. Google says it’s a way to print your email at home or office from your phone. Rackspaze and Amazon define it a little differently…

The IEEE has started to work on not one but two different programs to standardize cloud computing. How it is they think they can standardize it, when they can’t even agree on what it is?

Have you +1′ed yet?

Google have been experimenting with “social searches”… Using Google’s +1 program, when you search and find something you like you +1 it. Right now Google is saying it doesn’t affect search algorithms, but they are leaving it open for the future.

Sure Google watches where you go and what you read, but reading something or visiting a page doesn’t necessarily mean you like it. I don’t like a lot of the politics going on right now, but I read quite a bit about them.
